How to Look Up Your HOA on the Virginia CIC Registry
Virginia regulates community associations more tightly than most states. Every HOA, condominium, and cooperative must register with the Common Interest Community (CIC) Board at DPOR and file an annual report — and every professional management firm must hold a CICM (Common Interest Community Manager) license. Both records are public, and together they answer: Is my association registered? Who manages it? Is that manager licensed?
Here's how to find and read the records.
Open the DPOR license lookup
Go to the DPOR License Lookup. Association registrations and manager licenses are both searchable there — free, no account needed.
Search your association's name
Use the name from your deed, assessment notice, or declaration — for example "LAKESIDE VILLAGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION, INC." If the full name returns nothing, try just the first two or three words. Legal names often differ slightly from the community's marketing name.
Open the registration record
Pick the entry registered with the Common Interest Community Board and check the registration is current. Virginia associations renew annually; a lapsed registration is a compliance red flag worth raising with your board.
Identify the managing agent
The association's annual report filed with the CIC Board identifies its managing agent — the management company, if the association employs one. You can also request this from your board directly; the Property Owners' Association Act gives owners broad records access.
Verify the management company's license
Virginia requires management firms to hold an active CICM license. Once you've identified the firm, look it up in our Virginia directory — we list every CICM-licensed firm with license status, portfolio data, and verified Google reviews — or verify directly on the DPOR lookup.
What the CIC registry won't tell you
The registry confirms registration and licensing, but not quality: no reviews, no portfolio size, no track record. That's what our Virginia directory adds — every CICM-licensed firm with its CICB-registered portfolio (6,000+ associations linked) and address-verified Google ratings.
If you'd rather skip the manual lookup, browse your county or city to see which firms manage communities near you.
